A SHORT STORY OF GREAT CHANGES Bauhaus and VKHUTEMAS appeared almost simultaneously: Bauhaus in Germany in 1919 and VKHUTEMAS in Russia in 1920.

Today, absolutely anyone can be a Creator - an artist, in the broadest sense of the term. Technology has allowed us to become designers, sculptors, photographers, filmmakers - you just need a smartphone and ideas. One designer can solve such problems that previously could have been solved by a design Bureau. Bauhaus and VKHUTEMAS are two institutions that have become a mainstay of the avant-gardists of the twentieth century. The first has become the synonymous with design, the second - with bright, but a short phenomenon as the constructivism. They both lasted about 10 years. But in this short span of time they managed to create the future, which we live in. Utopia has become reality. It is they who keep the key to understanding our times.

About a hundred years ago, after the First world war, there gathered a small group of people, who did not want to live by the rules, as before. Some lived in Germany, others - in the USSR and they were considered outsiders everywhere. VKHUTEMAS appeared in a short era of "constructivism" that determined the nature of the school and the teaching methodology. Workshops were led by the great masters such as Kandinsky, Rodchenko, Lissitzky, Tatlin, Melnikov. One way or another, but the tasks set before the students by the teachers of VKHUTEMAS, were constructivist. Bauhaus artists wrote about the "otherness" when they came to work in the USSR under the leadership of Hannes Meyer in the 30-ies. Many German specialists, as they noted in their diaries, were amazed by the fact that the Soviet society, with all its claims about the revolutionary, was on all sides extremely conservative, backward (in technology), and not ready to cooperate at different stages of implementing the ideas of German experts. Later this cooperation turned into a tragedy for Bauhaus. Many were shot, disappeared in the camps, and some vanished under mysterious circumstances.

The main idea of VKHUTEMAS was more than a "new objectivity" of Bauhaus. It was a dream about building a society where there was no place left for "remnants" of the old art. This is a conceptually new world of a Soviet man, who has no ties with the past, but only with the future VKHUTEMAS (later named VHU-TEIN) ceased functioning in 1930. Bauhaus was closed in 1933.

Despite such a short period of existence, Bauhaus and VHUTE-MAS became the main centers, where modern art and design were formed. They were akin to the Big Bang that gave rise to totally new kinds of architecture and painting... VKHUTEMAS (later named VHU-TEIN) ceased functioning in 1930. Bauhaus was closed in 1933.
